I am directly copying this from the saving Jon Schaffer's music legacy group - I am writing my letter today & sending it out overnight mail as a gift to Jon for his Birthday on Wednesday - Even if you don't know Jon I would give this a shot. It looks like his lawyer will be reviewing the letters first so I'm sure they'll eliminate what can & cannot be used! Time is of the essence!
Time to shine for our talented friend.
Please write a character reference letter on Jon’s behalf if you are comfortable doing so.
A character reference letter is a letter written by someone who knows the defendant and can speak to their good character and responsible behavior. It can be very helpful in a sentencing hearing, as it can give the judge a more well-rounded view of the defendant and potentially influence the judge's decision.
Here is a general outline of what you can include in the letter:
1 Introduce yourself: Begin the letter by stating who you are, your relationship to the defendant, and how long you have known them.
2 Describe the defendant's character: In this section, you should speak to the defendant's good character. You can mention specific examples of how the defendant has exhibited honesty, responsibility, and other positive traits. If you have specific instances in mind, you should describe them in detail.
3 Discuss the defendant's background and accomplishments: This section should provide some background on the defendant and highlight any accomplishments they have achieved. This can include education, career or personal achievements, or any community service or volunteer work they have done.
4 Express remorse for the defendant's actions: If the defendant has committed a crime or wrongdoing, it is important to acknowledge that in the letter. You can express remorse for the defendant's actions and explain how they regret for the same.
5 Conclude by asking for leniency: In the closing section, you should ask the judge to consider the defendant's good character and accomplishments when making their decision, and ask the judge to consider leniency during the sentencing.
It's important to remember that this letter should be written in a professional and respectful manner, and should be typed and printed on a clean sheet of paper. Also, make sure to send it in advance to the judge or court.
It is always a good idea to proofread your letter multiple times for grammar and errors before mailing it to the court.
Please keep in mind that every criminal case is different, and depending on the nature of the crime, the tone and structure of the letter may vary. It's always a good idea to speak with an attorney or legal professional for guidance when writing a letter for a criminal case.
Please share this message with all his friends who want to help support our talented friend in this terrible time. For the price of postage, every positive character reference letter may be what saves his life and preserves his liberty outside of additional confinement.
Time is of the essence, please help immediately.
